Recently, North Fork Composites (NFC) has announced the launch of a new generation of high end materials and top performance fishing blanks with the addition of HMx-ray. HM because it’s the highest modulus currently available, x-ray because just like an x-ray machine. These blanks help anglers „see” underwater things they normally would not and help them feel the slightest vibration. According to the U.S. manufacturer, these are the lightest, strongest blanks they have ever produced.

The blanks are not just a future announcement or a press release, they are already available and you can find them on the North Fork Composites website, right here:

X-Ray Rod Blanks

What benefits brings the new HMx-ray material into manufacturing of high performance blanks?

1. HMx-ray is 20% lighter than NFC’s existing HM („Which is already insanely light!” – NFC).

2. HMx-ray is more sensitive than the current HM generation. Here is what the NFC design team says on the topic.

NFC: While we understand that “sensitivity” is subjective, it feels like you are receiving a shock through the arm, the ultimate aim is to allow you to “see” underwater.

3. HMx-ray comes with in un-sanded, flat matte-black finish, almost pear-like. NFC says that „sanding blanks makes them softer, the action of these blanks is crisp”.

4. The resin in these blanks is specifically developed for the fishing industry, and stops crack-propagation. Even if you impact the blank and create a microfracture which would normally result in a failure down the road, this amazing resin resists to continuing to crack, extending the life of the blank.

NFC: These are the lightest, strongest blanks we have ever manufactured.

5. HMx-ray is a scrim-less material, hoop is obtained by a very fine fiber slit into the other. This construction with a high modulus fiber allows the creation of an equal stiffness part, with less material. As Gary Loomis says about blanks construction: „Weight is a deterrent to performance”.

While other companies may display cool drawings, they will never show you the actual material. In the NFC video below you can literally see the fiber going 0 degrees on one side and 90 degrees on the other, allowing us to achieve perfect hoop:

These type of blanks – lighter and more sensitive – provide us with a great deal of „competitive advantage” with the applications and techniques that require detecting even the slightest and most subtle fish bites: fishing with jigs and soft plastics for bass, zander, perch, not only in the classic lakes, but also in very deep impoundments (dam reservoirs), on rivers (in strong current), where every bit of performance and sensitivity is often „squeezed” out of the fishing rods.

As always, the NFC team led by Gary Loomis does not cease to amaze us with new creations and top innovations and we cannot stop but wonder „What’s next”?
